Choosing Between Classic And Block Editors

Choosing Between Classic And Block Editors – The editor is probably the most used feature of WordPress by WordPress users. Of course, WordPress is a system that creates content.

As of WordPress 5.0, a new editor, Block Editor (= Gutenberg), has been added, allowing users to choose between the two editors. If you are not yet familiar with the Block Editor or use other page builder tools such as Elementor or Divi , you will most likely use the Classic Editor . You may be trying to adapt.

As you know, WordPress provides the ability to use the classic editor as a plugin for existing users who are familiar with the classic editor, on WordPress 5.0 or higher sites.

WordPress developer Automattic has also created a plugin called Gutenberg Ramp that allows you to apply a block editor to only certain types of content.

Although the classic editor has an expiration date (until the end of 2021), the reality is that many WordPress users are still using the classic editor. WordPress provides an option to choose an editor so that users can choose one of these two editors to edit their content.

Setting The Default Editor

Installing the Classic Editor plugin adds an option to choose the default editor in the admin dashboard “Settings > Writing” menu:

Administrators can use this option to specify the default editor as either the classic editor or the block editor. You can also grant this assignment option on a per-user basis. If the “Allow users to switch editors” option is set to “Yes”, individual users can also choose the default editor on their profile page as follows:

There is also an option box to switch the editor in the right sidebar area of the content editing window. Users can switch the classic editor to the block editor in the content editing window. You can switch from the block editor to the classic editor.

In the Gutenberg Ramp plugin?

This editor switching feature is not available if you have installed Gutenberg Ramp. That’s because Gutenberg Ramp is a plugin that only focuses on turning the block editor on and off per content type.

So, if you want users to be able to switch editors, you need to install the classic editor plugin, and if you want to enable/disable the block editor by content type, you can install the Gutenberg Ramp plugin.

If both plugins work at the same time, priority is given to the classic editor. This means that even if you enable the block editor for certain types of content in Gutenberg Ramp, setting the default editor to the classic editor in the classic editor plugin will make the classic editor the default.

I’m using the Gutenberg Ramp plugin to apply the block editor for “page” type content and still use the classic editor for the rest of the types.
