UpdraftPlus PREMIUM WordPress Backup Plugin – If the UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup plugin was included in the WordPress installation package instead of ” Akismet ” and ” Hello Dolly “, it would be the perfect choice for many users. Pay, set up and sleep peacefully.
Where are the UpdraftPlus settings located?
After installing and activating the plugin, go to the sidebar of the WordPress console and go to Settings – UpdraftPlus Backups.
How to backup a website
On the main page of the “UpdraftPlus Backups” section, click the big blue “Create RC Now” button. A pop-up window will appear with backup options. In it, you can choose whether to include the site database or files in the copy. You can backup only files or vice versa – only databases.
Clicking on the ellipsis in the “Include files in backup” line will reveal a list of specific folders that UpdraftPlus includes in a WordPress backup.
If necessary, you can exclude a particular folder from the backup. For example, if you want to backup only plugins, disable all folders except “Add-ons”. Or if you want only media files in the copy, turn off everything except the Downloads folder.
Once you have decided on the files that you want to include in the backup, click the “Create RK Now” button in the pop-up window. After that, the window will close and you will be able to watch the backup being created in real time.
When a backup is created, its files will appear at the bottom of the page – in the “Existing Backups” block.
How to download a backup to a computer
In the “Existing backups” block in the table with backups, there will be a “Backup data” column. In this column there will be several buttons with copies of those parts of the site that you included in the backup. Click on any of the buttons to download this or that part of the site to your computer.
How to restore a website from a backup
In the “Existing backups” block in the table with backups, there will be an “Actions” column. Click the “Restore” button in this column.
The Restore Site Backup Wizard opens. On the first screen, you need to choose what exactly you are going to: only a database or only files, or maybe all at once. Then click Next.
Next, UpdraftPlus will prepare the backup for recovery, at the end you only need to click the “Restore” button.
Next, the restoration of the site from the backup copy will begin automatically. Wait until the process completes and the message “Restore Successful!” appears. After that, click the “Return to UpdraftPlus Settings” button.
How to automate backups
In the UpdraftPlus Backups section, go to the Settings tab. The first two options are responsible for automating backups: “File backup schedule” and “Database backup schedule”.
Instead of manually copying, you can set the copy interval. It will not work to set any interval – only one of the options prepared in advance: once every 2/4/8/12 hours, or once a day/week/two weeks/month.
The exact backup time can only be set in a paid subscription. In free time, the time will be counted from the moment you last changed the interval.
In addition to the interval, in both options you can specify the number of copies that can be stored in the plugin at the same time. This will help not to consume too much space on the server or in the cloud storage.
After setting the interval for automatic backups on the main page of the “UpdraftPlus Backup” section in the “Next scheduled backups” block, you will see the exact time when the plugin will try to create the next backup.
How to set up automatic upload of backups
Under “UpdraftPlus Backups” go to the “Settings” tab and look for the “Select your remote storage” option. Choose among the options for unloading the appropriate one and click on it.
This option will help save space on hosting. Instead of storing backups on the server, UpdraftPlus will immediately send them to the cloud storage, another server via FTP or email.
Let’s say you want to set up uploads to Google Drive. To do this, click on the icon of this storage, scroll down the page and click “Save settings”.
A Google login popup will appear. Click “Sign in with Google” and log in to your account.
On the next page, Google will ask you to give the UpdraftPlus plugin access to the disk – click “Allow”. Then on the orange page, click “Complete setup”.
You have connected UpdraftPlus to Google Drive. Now backups will be uploaded to external storage, instead of being stored on the hosting.
Let’s test this to be sure. Click the “Create RK Now” button. In the pop-up window, there should be a checkmark in the item “Send backup to remote storage”. Previously, this item was greyed out.
Click “Create RK Now” in the pop-up window and wait for the copy to finish. Another copy should appear in the “Existing backups” block. Near the date of its creation in the column “Date of backup” there should be a Google Drive logo.
A new “UpdraftPlus” folder should appear on your Google Drive with the backup you just created.
How to exclude a file or folder from backups
Under “UpdraftPlus Backups” go to the “Settings” tab and look for the “Include in Files Backup” option.
In this option, you will see four checkboxes, each of which corresponds to a different folder with files in the wp-config directory : Add-ons – plugins folder , Themes – themes folder , Downloads – uploads folder and Other – any other folder in wp-content on your choice.
You can uncheck the desired folder to exclude entire folders, or you can add a rule to exclude only a specific folder. As a rule, they exclude folders with a cache and directly with the backups themselves. In principle, this is already done by default. In the list of exclusions, you will see cache , backup* , *backups , updraft folders .
Let’s say you want to exclude a specific plugin from the cache. To do this, click on the link “+ Add exclusion rule” in the block under the fourth field with a checkmark – “Any other folders in the wp-content directory”.
A pop-up window will appear where you need to choose how to exclude the file or folder from the backup. Select the first option – File/Directory.
A tree of files will appear in the wp-content directory . Expand the plugins folder and select the plugin folder that you want to exclude from the backup. Then click Add Exclusion Rule. By the same principle, you can exclude other folders from future backups.
Another example is when you need to exclude all files with certain extensions or all files starting with certain characters from future backups. To do this, click again on the link “+ Add exclusion rule” in the block under the fourth field. In the pop-up window, select the fourth option – “Files / directories containing the specified characters in their names.”
Then select in the directory tree the directory for which this rule will apply. Then, just below, enter the extension or the desired characters and choose where to look for them: at the beginning, end, or anywhere in the file. At the end, click “Create an exception rule”.
How to change the backup directory
In the UpdraftPlus Backups section, go to the Settings tab and scroll down to the Expert Settings option. In this option, click on the link “Show expert settings”.
Among the additional options that open, find the option “Backup directory”. The name of the default folder can be changed, but the new folder must be inside the wp-content folder . Otherwise, the plugin may crash.
